Tools, Materials and Supplies

  • Newsprint pad -18x24”
  • Conte crayons, Graphite STICKS (not pencils) 2B or 4B,
  • Black Sharpie, grease pencil (china marker)
  • Goop Hand Cleaner, etc. (for clean up)
  • 18” metal cork-backed ruler
  • Large plastic 90 degree triangle
  • Erasers, Erasure Shield, Tortillion, Torchon, or Stumps
  • Layout pad - 32 lb. ledger 14x 17”
  • Scissors
  • Black construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Ebony or General Layout pencil
  • Mat board - 20x30”, one black, one white
  • 5 tubes of acrylic paint - (primary red, primary yellow, primary blue, black, white)
  • Prismacolor pencils - (red, yellow, blue, black, magenta, green, white)  
  • Brushes (1 small, 1 medium, 1 large) and mixing tray
  • White illustration board - 20x30”
  • Two blank CD-R disks (or flash drive)

Evaluation

  • Attendance is critical and will be taken daily; either you are in attendance or you are not. Time management problems will have a negative impact on your grade. Failure to bring proper materials and tools will have a negative impact on your grade.
  • Projects are due for critique at the assigned deadline.
  • Quizzes cannot be made up.
  • Incomplete or late projects will have a negative impact on your grade.
  • Projects will be graded on achievement of assigned objectives; mastery of the concepts; technical excellence; imagination, creativity, and aesthetics.
  • Everything you do is a reflection of who you are (including attitude).
  • It is my job to evaluate you accordingly.

Major Learning Outcomes

 The student will be able to:

  1. Use the basic terminology employed in opaque painting.
  2. Describe the art elements used in painting.
  3. Demonstrate the basic principles of organization.
  4. Visually define three dimensional space in two dimensional terms.
  5. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of tools and materials.
  6. Apply practical methodology to individual projects.
  7. Mix colors, tints and shades.

Tools and Supplies

The following is the minimum needed to begin work in painting.  Please be sure you buy only the exact colors listed below.  If you are in doubt, ask the instructor before purchasing any color.

  • Acrylic painting brushes: bristle bright
    • Sizes:
      • 1" and 1/2" bright bristle brushes (#12 & #6 Winton)
      • One small detail brush
  • Palette knife (optional)
